This is one of my favorite things to still see at the fair.
It amazed me when I saw it as a kid and it still amazes me
- though for different reasons.
When I first saw it, in the early 1960's, I
thought it looked very cool and futuristic. All the flashing lights made it
look like something from the original Star Trek or an early Bond movie.
What amazes me about it now is that in a
time when there are computers everywhere, people are still impressed by the
flashing lights. Now it looks like something from out of the 50's. Even its'
name, the Televac is from that era. Yet young and old still line up for
their "scientific" computerized personality analysis.
It's hard to read on the sign in the picture
but it says "Horoscopes and Lucko Numbers $1.00 extra". I've never heard the
word Lucko before. Was it a formerly unknown Marx brother? After thinking
about it for longer then I should have, I thought it might be a subliminal
merging of the words lucky and lotto - ooooh Lucko!
